This is a letter of recommendation regarding… The Reading Window Tutoring Demonstration Project. This project has and will continue to benefit many “slow readers” and illiterate families in the Louisa County area.

I have reviewed letters of support and Ms. Piper Martin’s plan of operation. I highly approve of the Reading Window’s “one-to-one” tutoring sessions and applaud Ms. Martin’s dedication to improving the educational levels of the children of our community.

The Reading Window has an excellent success ratio for the past 10 years. I believe this is a positive community action project.

Thank you for allowing me to bring the Reading Window Tutoring Demonstration Project to your attention.

Sincerely,

V. Earl Dickenson

Piper Martin and several volunteers, most of them from Twin Oaks, have been putting in hundreds of free hours with the Louisa Head Start children, introducing them to books and the joy of reading. All of the children who played the Reading Windows Game are ready and eager to get into books. In two years, eight of them had begun to read independently. These kids are between three and five years old – pre kindergarten.

Piper has also made her services available for a nominal fee to parents interested in having their children’s progress accelerated and in learning to play the game themselves with their children. I believe, in some cases, parent’s reading is improved.

Piper and the Reading Windows Group were reliable, conscientious, developmentally appropriate, and cooperative about complying with our regulations, such as criminal checks and T.B. tests.

I believe they would be a worthwhile investment in the future of our community’s children, and would be scrupulously responsible about using and accounting for any funds made available to them to continue their work.

Sincerely,

Donna C.
Louisa Head Start Teacher

To Whom it May Concern:

I am a teacher and the director of a tutoring service, Champion Tutoring, located in Charlottesville. Through a few community members, I had the pleasure of learning about Piper Martin’s unique methods of teaching reading.

On October 9, 1994, Piper invited me to observe her tutoring a young student, in the second grade. She had an excellent rapport with the child and had implemented a motivational system that was very effective.

Her teaching methods emphasize comprehension. She provided instruction that built off the child’s previous success. She maintains a library of enticing books that she uses in conjunction with school literature. She reviewed new concepts and built on the student’s personal life experience. The stories came alive for the student.

I would highly recommend Piper’s services as a reading teacher. Her methods are both fun and challenging. I intend to employ these methods within the reading curriculum offered through Champion Tutoring. Reading is a fundamental skill that should be mastered and found to be enjoyable. I believe that Piper’s methods will accomplish those very goals.

Most Sincerely,

Audrey K.
Executive Director
