Tip #11: All Games have Rules…

Piper and Mathew

All games have rules, and it is sometimes helpful to use some comparisons to help your child understand this in a fun way. One example of how you might reach an understanding with the child about the objectives of this game is by comparisons with other fun games.

You might ask the child, “When you play basketball, what are you trying to do?” “Right, get the ball in the hoop. And if you don’t get the ball in the hoop, you don’t win, right?” “When you play tag, what are you trying to do?” “Right, touch the other person. And if you don’t touch anyone, you don’t win, right?”

“Well in this Reading Window Game you win by just trying to do what I ask you to do. So if you just TRY to get the ball in the hoop, you win. Or, if you TRY to tag someone, you win. So, just by TRYING to do what I ask, you win this game. And just by trying to do each little thing in this game, you will end up being able to read this whole book.”
