Erick is probably a typical 4 year old boy with a lot of energy, desire to learn and somewhat of a short attention span. He knew his alphabet, his shapes, his numbers to 100, could write his first name and use the phone. He could carry on an intelligent conversation with a wide range of vocabulary.
Holding Erick’s attention was Piper’s first major accomplishment. She started with 15 minutes and worked up to more than half an hour. This is because Piper makes the learning process challenging but fun. She makes sure he understands what he has read by also reading the sentences backward. The first 5 minutes is Erick reading and being told what words he doesn’t know. He then sounds the first letters of those words. Since the environment is one of learning fun, he takes the energy to concentrate and get all the words right. Piper is very generous with her praise to Erick, which he loves to hear.
Erick has progressed to reading a new story completely by himself. He totally enjoys going to reading lessons and often asks about other words outside of class, thus showing the effectiveness of making the learning process interesting.
I am extremely pleased with Piper’s and Erick’s accomplishment and I have to give the successful credit to Piper because of her technique, knowledge and patience in dealing with and keeping an energized four year old on track. Thank you, Piper.
