Welcome to The Reading Window

OUR MISSION is to enable every child to read with understanding and enjoyment.

We prevent and reverse schoolroom failure through efficient methods of teaching children and by coaching families in new ways to enjoy reading together.

***************************************************************

Our goals are to serve children without regard for family income and to mount a research study to help determine whether the Reading Window methods should be introduced into the USA public schools.

The combination of Reading Window methods, created by Piper Martin, is a remarkably fast, effective, delight-filled, economical way of teaching reading, now being used at a nonprofit school in Louisa, Virginia. We are actively seeking ways to disseminate our know-how to other educators, parents, and caregivers across the world.

Piper Martin has written a simple children’s book, Dog and dog-cat, designed for a young child’s enjoyment and understanding and for efficient use of simple but effective cut-outs called “reading-windows.”  The book includes templates on the last page to guide you in creating your own reading-windows without cost.  Click here to get your free copy of Dog and dog-cat to use with a beginner reader (Pre-school or Kindergarten).  We’ll also send basic instructions for starting the Reading Window Game using this book.  You can immediately benefit from this fun-filled reading method!

A flexible blending of new teaching techniques with time-tested methods, this way of transmitting literacy removes barriers for the dyslexic and learning-impaired, gives challenged children six months’ grade level improvement in just six weeks, and can successfully move average students into “Talented and Gifted” classes.

We adapt our methods for remedial reading with older children and adults, and it works — though not with the spectacularly swift transformations that we see in preschool, kindergarten, and first- and second-grade children.

Our primary means of instruction is six weeks of daily private tutoring sessions for each student with a fully trained Reading Window tutor. Paradoxically, this appears more cost-effective than full reliance on the classroom. Whenever possible, we also encourage and teach families to read together with enjoyment and understanding.

Our students love this way of learning.

Testimonials

This year in school my daughter was required to count backwards from 10; she struggled with this in her classroom setting all year, but learned this in less than 3 weeks with her tutor, Sherri. — Jennifer Hyer (February 26, 2008)

In just 6 weeks, children struggling with reading become happy, enthusiastic readers! Their skills improve at least 1/2 year's worth. Our tutors work one-to-one with a child, while also empowering a parent or guardian to help the child reach success. Each session consists of 30 hour-long lessons. Our methods build self-confidence and increase comprehension while we all have FUN! Need-based scholarships are now available through a grant from the Charlottesville Area Community Foundation.
